Essay

The development of New and digital media means the audience is more powerful in terms of the consumption and production. Discuss the argument for and against this view.

New and Digital media has changed the world as we know it, many agree that it has empowered audiences and created new paths for success and wealth while creating revolutions in technology and society.
In terms of consumption and production, is the internet a tool for the people or the worlds biggest surveillance device? A Pluralist would believe the internet is a free form platform and society can freely choose what to watch, browse and create, however, a Marxist believes in quite the opposite, that a hierarchy exists and humans are exposed subliminally to a form of brainwashing known as advertising.

A pluralist would argue that websites such as Facebook, YouTube and Twitter allow the public freedom of speech and a sense of libertarian-ism which is what  Pioneers of the internet think.
"The dream behind the Web is of a common information space in which we communicate by sharing information" - Tim Berners Lee, this quote leads us to believe that the internet was created for pure and simplistic reasons, to share information freely and available across the globe however, it has become so much more, media conglomerates have taken action on the cash cow and monetized and advertised their way through to the consumers minds and wallets, the internet is now a multimedia platform intertwining video, music, text, communication. A consumerists dream.

A Marxist view considers the fact that everything in the media has been placed for a reason, to restrict society's freedom and be formed from a young age to think and act like consumers or "mindless monkeys" not producers which is where the internet shows its pluralistic values, the internet allows users to speak their mind, for example the Arab springs, users tweeted about what was happening with the government whereby 200,000 tweets where made in the first 18 days and in its peak 200,000 tweets an hour, this created a revolution which allowed citizens of Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and Yemen fight for Democracy.

Simplistically Marxists believe a man such as Rupert Murdoch, a rich elite with much power over the media can force his ideologies on society through his news and TV stations to create hegemony across the public, as he owns so much of the media a general consumer would find it impossible to not watch something created by News Corp. this is where capitalism and globalism come together, and by these two things coming together it is easier to create dominant ideologies. this follows Millband's ideas on Marxism saying the ruling class have a big role to play in the media creating ideologies and social norms, since they control all the information audiences receive.

A pluralist could argue against this point as Rupert Murdoch's paper 'The sun' one of the best selling Saturday newspapers struggles to find its place on the web, does this mean that society has found better more independent sources of news for free, from research, websites such as YouTube have channels such as 'Source fed' creating content just as fast as any other news conglomerate, this could mean that audiences are not only subject to media conglomerates but have found their own preference of news in terms of delivery and platform, however, these channels are really just replicas of the bigger chains of news stations and really they are receiving the same news just condensed, this can raise the question to whether any of us really have freedom of choice or are we just subject to the ruling class' ideologies?

The internet is developing, rapidly, and although the government, media corporations and advertising industries may not seem like they know what they are doing at all times, they are always one step ahead of the consumer, Marxist values and ideas seem to make greater sense as we are all spoon fed our entertainment, information, and even our own views and ideas are not original, as consumers we see and we replicate but until society can invent for purposes apart from money and wealth, then the most we can ever achieve is to join the ruling class.

Why Mail Online's 'terracotta army' is winning the digital war

the mail onlines following is huge and succesfull

"They certainly appear to be winning the digital war in terms of traffic volume, and by a considerable margin. Unfortunately, as with all armies, maintaining discipline is often problematic."

One eye-popping statistic is that the staffing has increased from 300 in September last year to 460 now (of which 100 are based in the US)

there is also controversy over the nature of the site's content which attracts the most hits - the so-called "sidebar of shame".
It is replete with under-dressed celebrities not doing much of interest and not saying anything worthwhile. But it is undeniably popular. Gossip and glamour sell.
So there is an obvious disconnect between the Mail print titles and Mail Online's most-read content. It is a bold strategy and, thus far, it has been very successful.

I believe that the mail online has been able to adapt to the change in platforms very swiftly and successfully and with more ease than any other paper, this is why they are more successful than any others.

Virgin Galactic to accept Bitcoin for space flights

Richard Branson

Richard branson accepts the BitCoin currency as a form of payment for his space shuttle experience.
BitCoin is  a crypto currency which is solely based on the internet and has no central bank, they currency is formed by algorithmic problems being solve by BitCoin miners, some people call bit coin a highly unstable currency, however some say its the currency that can stop inflation, bit coins has reached lows of under 100$ and last week hit a high of 700$ per bit coin.

Richard branson states, “I have invested in some bitcoins myself and find it fascinating how a whole new global currency has been created,” Branson said. “For people who can afford to invest a little in bitcoins, it’s worth looking into.”

Flights on Virgin Galactic cost $250,000; passengers can cancel up to three months before departure

I believe that this is a great idea, however branson might be making a huge loss, as it is a time consuming process to convert btc into us dollars and during this time he the worth of bitcoin may drop.

Bitcoin seems like a promising currency however, i dont really see any use for it then to make more money that already exists, i have my self invested in btc only to make more gbp, notable thing btc has been used for is the transaction of drugs anonymously etc... so this could have stained its name

Sun Online finds it hard to hit the net.

Arsenal versus Manchester United

The first figures since the paper put up its paywall show a heavy 30% drop in audience, despite the promise of goals on demand

  • Sun Online had a digital total of 6,244,489
  • 2,389,764 arriving by smartphone or pad alone
  • with a unique total at 4,188,720
The Sun seem to be basing there business model on football fans, with prices of football tickets and tv subscribtions being at an all time high, it would be very hard for football fans to keep up with all these subscriptions, however due to the fact that they are making money of the users and not the advertiseing adds a benefit to the payway, also they would make substantially more money from their readers so this means the 30% drop may not have affected their revenue as much.

Crowdfund this: Rubicon's £200 3D scanner.

Crowdfund this: Rubicon's £200 3D scanner.

Rubicon 3D aims to bring fast, simple 3D scanning to the masses.

Getting real-life objects converted into 3D models is an expensive affair often costing in excess of £1000, something the £200 Rubicon 3D aims to fix.
compared to most other 3D scanners on the market, including the MakerBot Digitizer, the Rubicon 3D is one-quarter of the cost, while operating faster and with a similar accuracy. It is also compact and simple to use, making 3D object scanning quick and easy.

  • costs only £200
  • easy to use
  • only scans small products
  • uses a webcam available to everyone
I believe this technology is great as 3d printing is coming to our homes very soon, it is the future of technology and this is the start of something big as the £200 price tag is not hefty at all.
people will be able to use these scans for cad 3d designs and animation too.
also the fact that ordinary people re able to fund this project through kick-starter is a new technology platform in itself, where people pledge however much they can afford to make projects happen, and if they pledge enough the could receive rewards including the product itself for a fraction of the rrp.

WEEKLY NDM 11/11/13

Abandon digital radio switchover plans, stations tell minister.

DAB radio

Stations tell the government not to make the radio switch to digital as there are still many people using analogue, this could cost stations and radio users hundreds of pounds otherwise. this poses a serious risk of listeners loosing their access to radio stations.
The group is made up of 13 commercial companies including UTV-owned national sports station TalkSport and Celador Radio run by Paul Smith, the man behind ITV's Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?.
Scott Taunton says there is no real benefit to changing over to digital, there is no demand in the market and listeners are happy with the service they are provide at this time.

  • The consortium representing 80 stations across the UK listened to by 6 million people a week
  • there are about 100m analogue sets still in use in UK homes.
  • A total of 35.6% of all radio listening was on digital platforms in the third quarter of this year
I believe there is no useful reason to change over to digital radio, as of now the only people who use it are the people who are set in their ways of using the device, this may upset many of the elderly citizens of the uk, the next generation will not need radio soon it may die out.

buzzfeed screen grab

"We feel strongly that traditional media have given up on young people, and have not made a commitment to tell stories that are interesting for people under 40 or 50 years old," said Steinberg.

BuzzFeed now has more than 100 full-time writers, with a growing proportion focusing on news and politics. Steinberg said that around 40% of the site's traffic comes from links shared on Facebook, and 70% from social sources in general.

TV Christmas adverts battle moves online as shops target social media.

Marks & Spencer Christmas advertisement

At the end of the week, retailers will have launched their festive campaigns, this year they are spending a lot more online to mirror spending habbits.

  • retailers will spend around £390m in the last three months of 2013
  • Littlewoods, the Co-op and Waitrose have launched their campaigns in the last few days, and John Lewis, Marks & Spencer and Debenhams will all be screening their first Christmas adverts this week.
  • Morrinsons are expected to spend about 9% more on television than last year, with an expensive scramble for the prized slots around the X Factor final on ITV in the second weekend in December.
Overall I believe that the retail companies are on the right direction with the advertising, they are changing with the times and making sure that their audiences are targeted where they are the most.
this can help bring in more revenue into the economy instead of people buying things from shops that are owned by Americans etc.

readers comments

Great, so now even less of a chance of clicking a link on a web page successfully first time, with all the incessant and irritating jumping up and down pages often do these days while loading, with so many banner adverts.

I remember the good old days of basic html pages and wind-up computers.
The adverts are pretty, but a Christmas built on debt will turn to dust - best to avoid the temptation if you can, and share what you have with friends and family.

Argos MyTablet review - a budget 7in Android tablet from the high-street retailer Argos

he MyTablet’s dual-core processor certainly isn’t powerful, which coupled with its limited 1GB of RAM means multitasking suffers.
Webpages are slow to load. Scrolling lags badly. Watching video on services such as BBC iPlayer is an experience full of frustrating stutter on the tablet’s low-resolution display. (It probably wouldn't drive a standard, let alone high-definition, TV display.)
Argos rates the battery life at around five hours. My testing suggests that's an overestimate – I got around four hours of general use sending emails, browsing the web and watching 30 minutes of video.
The MyTablet comes with a proprietary small pin power adapter, but can also be charged via micro-USB – although the fit and finish of the micro USB port is (surprise!) loose and not quite flush with the edge of the device, making plugging in the cable difficult.

SPECS
  • Screen: 7in LCD with 1024 x 600 pixels
  • Processor: 1.6GHz dual-core processor
  • RAM: 1GB of RAM
  • Storage: 8GB plus microSD slot supporting up to 32GB cards
  • Operating system: Android 4.2.2
  • Camera: 2-megapixel rear camera, 0.3-megapixel front-facing camera
  • Connectivity: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, mini HDMI, micro USB
  • Dimensions: 193 x 111.5 x 9mm

My view on this tablet is that both argos and tesco have made the high quality technology that is a tablet into a joke, i believe that if someone wants to get a tablet you should save up and get something good, the words budget and tablet should not go together and if someone does decide to get one of these then they will soon realise that their tablet is becoming slow and laggy, and they lack in modern features.

Plenary

There are many changes these impacts have made on news stories, opinions from the public and use of citizen journalist are becoming the norm due to these classic cases.
UGC is a big change also, allows people to tell their own news separate from the mainstream media on sites such as YouTube and Twitter, many journalists have turned to twitter to upload pictures and news link to get the story before any of the major reporters.

The news agenda-
The idea of the news agenda has completely been revolutionised due to the empowerment given to the public by the internet, people no longer are restricted to the values and ideologies of big co-corporate business owners but instead smaller and more intimate community that may touch on more niche topics.

The roles of Professionals in news-
roles of professionals in the news has generally stayed the same however, journalists are expected to take pictures/videos with mobile cameras , independent journalists post to twitter and YouTube.

Monday 23 September 2013

1. a citizen journalist is a new form of journalist, consisting of ordinary everyday people using their mobile phone cameras to capture news story events as they are happening.

2.one of the first examples of news being generated by 'ordinary people' was in 1991, the Rodney King Beating, after  a high speed chase, Rodney King was  beaten 53 times, this would have gone unnoticed however a citizen filmed on their camera the events that unfolded that night.

3.News stations now allow people to call in to give their opinions and allow members of the general public to come on set and talk about their experiences.

4. the differences consist of higher quality image which would be shot by the news team, however the news teams footage would be after the action, the citizen journalist would have caught the action at the time it was happening for example the wolich murderer was caught on tape and his speech was also recorded.

5. usually a journalist or editor, someone who decides what is or what isn't news they mediate the news.

6. gate keepers jobs are becoming less relevant due to the fact that UGC has arrived, anyone can post anything they want, and the news can no longer be regulated in such a way.

Social media: $10.5bn for 140 characters? Twitter floats. #bargain

twitter has come to the market with a valuation of $10.5 BILLION,

  • 58% of tweets are from women
  • 60% users access from mobile
I feel that twitter has done amazingly well to get so far in only 7 years, it allows people to generate their own content and is the fastest spreader of breaking news.
with twitter floating on the stock market this means twitter will have more money to upgrade their services and more amazing features will come in the future.
however this could be a bad thing as some changes may be made to please shareholders and not the users themselves.

This news story is on pirated and illegal downloading of music,
study's show that The number of pirated music tracks in the UK has fallen by a third to 199m in the past year, according to research published by Ofcom.

It found that one in six internet users in the UK had illegally streamed or downloaded files in the past year and 9% had pirated music between March and May.

I believe that this story shows a good future for the music industry and that people are actually respecting artists and their craft. this shows a promising future for the industry and claims that 'being a singer isn't worth it' will drop.
