Plenary

There are many changes these impacts have made on news stories, opinions from the public and use of citizen journalist are becoming the norm due to these classic cases.
UGC is a big change also, allows people to tell their own news separate from the mainstream media on sites such as YouTube and Twitter, many journalists have turned to twitter to upload pictures and news link to get the story before any of the major reporters.

The news agenda-
The idea of the news agenda has completely been revolutionised due to the empowerment given to the public by the internet, people no longer are restricted to the values and ideologies of big co-corporate business owners but instead smaller and more intimate community that may touch on more niche topics.

The roles of Professionals in news-
roles of professionals in the news has generally stayed the same however, journalists are expected to take pictures/videos with mobile cameras , independent journalists post to twitter and YouTube.

1. a citizen journalist is a new form of journalist, consisting of ordinary everyday people using their mobile phone cameras to capture news story events as they are happening.

2.one of the first examples of news being generated by 'ordinary people' was in 1991, the Rodney King Beating, after  a high speed chase, Rodney King was  beaten 53 times, this would have gone unnoticed however a citizen filmed on their camera the events that unfolded that night.

3.News stations now allow people to call in to give their opinions and allow members of the general public to come on set and talk about their experiences.

4. the differences consist of higher quality image which would be shot by the news team, however the news teams footage would be after the action, the citizen journalist would have caught the action at the time it was happening for example the wolich murderer was caught on tape and his speech was also recorded.

5. usually a journalist or editor, someone who decides what is or what isn't news they mediate the news.

6. gate keepers jobs are becoming less relevant due to the fact that UGC has arrived, anyone can post anything they want, and the news can no longer be regulated in such a way.

Social media: $10.5bn for 140 characters? Twitter floats. #bargain

twitter has come to the market with a valuation of $10.5 BILLION,

  • 58% of tweets are from women
  • 60% users access from mobile
I feel that twitter has done amazingly well to get so far in only 7 years, it allows people to generate their own content and is the fastest spreader of breaking news.
with twitter floating on the stock market this means twitter will have more money to upgrade their services and more amazing features will come in the future.
however this could be a bad thing as some changes may be made to please shareholders and not the users themselves.

This news story is on pirated and illegal downloading of music,
study's show that The number of pirated music tracks in the UK has fallen by a third to 199m in the past year, according to research published by Ofcom.

It found that one in six internet users in the UK had illegally streamed or downloaded files in the past year and 9% had pirated music between March and May.

I believe that this story shows a good future for the music industry and that people are actually respecting artists and their craft. this shows a promising future for the industry and claims that 'being a singer isn't worth it' will drop.
